When air freight makes financial sense

Air costs more per kg but less in working capital. Here is the simple calculation that tells you which is cheaper for your business.

Air freight from Asia to Accra runs 5 – 10 days against 30 – 45 days by sea. The per-kilogram rate is several times higher, which is why most importers dismiss it. That is often the wrong decision, because the freight rate is only one of the costs a shipment carries.

Understand chargeable weight first

Airlines charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight in kilograms is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000. A carton of foam packaging can cost five times its scale weight. Before you quote air, measure your cartons.

The four cases where air wins outright

• High value density — electronics, phone accessories, pharmaceuticals, spare parts. Freight is a small percentage of goods value.
• Seasonal windows — stock that must be on the shelf for a specific season is worthless if it arrives late.
• Stock-out recovery — a fast-moving line that is out of stock is losing margin every day; air replenishment protects the customer relationship.
• Perishables and short-shelf-life goods, where sea transit consumes the product's usable life.

The calculation that decides it
